You are going to be kayaking, mountain biking, hiking, boating and swimming in a variety of conditions so bringing the right gear is critical to being comfortable during your adventures. It’s more important that what you bring fits well and is broken in, than it is that it is fashionable or a brand name. (My best diveware is over five years old and has yellow duckies on a blue background but boy are they comfortable!!!) We have been doing this for a long time so have used our experience to put together a list of everything that you will need to bring.
Clothing - though we are called the Sunshine Coast for a reason our summers can still bring rain, wind and a range of temperatures throughout the day. For that reason the trick to always being comfortable is layered clothing. For the upper body a short or long sleeve shirt, followed by a second layer (fleece or wool sweater), and an outer waterproof windbreaker provides maximum flexibility. For the lower body quick dry shorts/a bathing suit under lightweight long pants and rain pants are the recommended approach. Tip - rain pants with zippered lower legs are easier to take on/off over hiking boots. As far as materials are concerned, synthetics such as fleece, polypropylene or capilene are good and natural fibers such as wool and silk will keep you warm even when wet. Please only bring cotton for your non-active leisure time as cotton will draw warmth from your body when wet.
Footwear – watershoes with a thick rubber sole and a neoprene upper are excellent for kayaking and beachcombing as they provide protection for walking on rocks and shells yet dry quickly. Tip - teva style sandals are acceptable but don’t provide as much abrasion protection as watershoes. You will need a pair of lightweight hiking boots that provide adequate ankle support. Make sure they are well broken in, a 10km hike is not the place to try them out for the first time. Cross trainers or sturdy running shoes will be required for biking, no open toed shoes will be permitted for safety reasons. Make sure to bring several pair of non-cotton socks that fit your foot well. Bunched socks will quickly lead to painful blisters. An optional item is a pair of slippers to wear around the Resort where the wood floors and outside decks can be chilly in the morning.
Headwear – you will be spending a lot of time out in the sunshine and on the water where the reflected sunshine can be harsh so bring a brimmed hat, bandana and sunglasses with a sports strap (we hate watching expensive sunglasses fluttering down to the ocean floor 600+ feet down).
Misc. Equipment
Bring your favorite reading material with you as there is not much in the way of selection in our neck of the woods although we do have a private library containing books about the local flora, fauna and natural history.
